Places to visit in Karamürsel

Karamürsel is a peaceful coastal town located about 30–35 kilometers from Kocaeli’s city center, İzmit. Though often passed by quietly, it has a soul you can feel if you give it a little time. As you step into the district, a good place to begin your journey is at the resting place of the town’s namesake  the famous Ottoman sailor Karamürsel Bey. He played an important role in the conquest of İznik and in establishing the Ottoman Navy. His tomb is more than a historical stop; it’s a quiet reminder of where this town’s roots run deep.

From there, if you're in the mood for nature and fresh air, Akpınar Spring is about 15–20 km away in Akpınar Village. Known for its natural spring water, the area is also surrounded by a relaxing picnic and recreation area  perfect for a quiet day out. But that’s not the only green retreat nearby. Just 8–10 km from town lies Karapınar Village, home to Başdeğirmen Picnic Area, a lush spot where you can enjoy a meal at one of the trout restaurants, let the kids play freely, and just take in the peace that city life often lacks.

If you're here, tasting the local trout is a must  it’s fresh, flavorful, and tied to the region’s identity. And don't leave without experiencing a village-style breakfast, where everything tastes like it was made just for you. Another local treasure is the traditional “Karamürsel Sepeti,” a handwoven basket passed down through three generations of craftsmanship. You’ll understand the old saying “Did you think I was a Karamürsel basket?” a bit better once you’ve seen one.

One of the best spots to breathe in the wide-open view is Aşıklar Tepesi also known as Oluklu Hill only 7 km from the town center. On the drive up, you’re treated to panoramic views of the İzmit Gulf and the Marmara Sea. It’s a perfect place for photos, fresh air, and reflection.

For those seeking a swim, Karamürsel’s Altınkemer public beach is blue-flag certified  clean, family-friendly, and calm. Kumsal Beach is another relaxed option, and the town’s 16 km shoreline offers plenty of places to walk, breathe, and watch the sea meet the green hills of the Samanlı Mountains.

In nearby Ereğli, just 4 km away, you can wander among old Ottoman houses, experience the local fish market, and enjoy the freshest seafood right by the water. Ereğli is small, but its charm runs deep like most places in Karamürsel.

Whether you choose a mountain road to explore the forests of the Samanlı range or prefer to end your day in one of the seafront cafés watching the sun set over the horizon, Karamürsel invites you to slow down and remember how good simple things can feel.
