11 Best Things To Do In Corfu Island
When I took my first step on Corfu Island, I felt that it was not just a holiday destination, but a state of mind, even a journey through time. Narrow roads shaded by olive trees, hidden coves opening to azure waters and stone streets bearing the traces of the past in every corner... Watching the island wake up from the ramparts of the Old Fortress at sunrise, saying goodbye to the day with a glass of ouzo on the golden beach of Paleokastritsa at sunset and embarking on a timeless journey under the nostalgic lights of Liston Street at night... Corfu is an island that fascinates with every moment and deepens the more you discover. And here, countless stories are waiting for you, scattered all around, waiting to be discovered.
1) Taste Tour in Agni Bay
When I arrived at Agni Bay, I felt that time seemed to pass more slowly here. This tranquil bay, where small fishing boats glide through the calm water and waves gently caress the rocks as they crash on the shore, is one of Corfu's best kept secrets. After an early morning swim in the crystal clear waters, there's nothing quite like savouring seafood in a shady taverna with a glass of refreshing white wine. After trying Nikolas Taverna's famous grilled octopus, I realised why it is so highly praised, it is a feast of flavour with its soft texture and light sooty smell. If you want to feel the authentic spirit of the island and spend a peaceful day, Agni Bay is definitely a stop you should add to your route.
2) See the mesmerising view of Cape Drastis
When I arrived at Cape Drastis, it was impossible not to be fascinated by this unique landscape that nature has so skilfully shaped. Located at the northernmost tip of Corfu Island, this spot resembles a postcard with its steep cliffs and turquoise sea. The path is a bit adventurous; the narrow and bumpy path requires caution, but the view becomes more mesmerising with every step. Although it is easier to access during the summer months, there is sometimes a small fee at the entrance. If you are lucky, there is a chance to pass for free. Especially being here at sunset is an experience in itself, that moment when the red tones of the sun embrace the rocks is one of the most fascinating moments you can experience in Corfu. If you want to be alone with nature and witness an unforgettable view, Cape Drastis is definitely worth a visit.
3) Explore Corfu's Old Town (Kerkyra)
You can't visit Corfu and not get lost in Corfu Town (Kerkyra). It's not just a city, it's a fascinating open-air museum with history and elegance in every corner. While wandering around the old city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you feel like you are walking in a time tunnel. You can get lost in the narrow streets with Venetian influence, admire the pastel-coloured stone buildings, and take a journey through history as you pass through the passages leading to secret courtyards. Don't forget to take an espresso break in the cafes you come across while wandering the cobbled streets; this is the perfect place not only to explore but also to enjoy the moment.
4) Visit Vlacherna Monastery
Perhaps one of Corfu's most iconic landmarks, the Vlacherna Monastery is like something out of a postcard - a small white monastery that seems to float on the sea, connected to the mainland by a narrow road and offering a mesmerising view from every angle. If you visit at sunset or sunrise, you can experience the unique atmosphere when the golden yellow lights hit the white walls of the monastery. Open all year round, this historic building offers not only spiritual tranquillity but also unforgettable photo opportunities. One of the must-see places in Corfu.
5) See St George Church (Kerkyra)
This impressive church, which looks like an ancient Doric temple from the outside, was actually built by the British in the 19th century. Located in the Old Fortress in Kerkyra, the Church of St George is one of the most impressive buildings in Corfu. Offering a fascinating view with its imposing columns and historical atmosphere, this building sheds light on the island's past. Concerts are organised here at certain times of the year, so be sure to check the events calendar when you arrive. Thanks to its magnificent acoustics, attending a music concert in this historic venue can be one of your most memorable experiences in Corfu.
6) Get Ready for a Marriage Proposal on Canal d'Amour
Sidari, one of the most vibrant areas of Corfu Island, is home to a unique natural wonder that you must see: Canal d'Amour (Love Canal). This natural canal, formed between the rocks eroded by wind and waves, is one of the most romantic spots on the island. According to local legend, couples who swim together here will soon get married. So, if you are waiting for a marriage proposal or want to create a special moment, this is the place for you. Swimming among the golden cliffs, exploring natural hollows and watching the spectacular sunset will make your time here unforgettable.
7) Try Local Flavours
Greece is famous for its fresh and flavoursome food and Corfu is no exception. Here you will find the best synthesis of Aegean and Ionian cuisine. There are many local delicacies on the island that you must try. Lamb is the most preferred meat in Corfu cuisine, but fresh seafood and shellfish are also a favourite. Especially in the taverns in the coastal towns, you will be amazed by the flavour of the fish caught daily. Don't forget to complete this experience with a glass of local wine or ouzo.
8) Watch the Sunset at Loggas Beach
If you're looking for the most mesmerising spot to watch the sunset in Corfu, Loggas Beach is it. From the top of the cliff, you'll feel the sea stretching into infinity. When you get here, you can either go down to the beach and put your feet in the cool waters, or sit in one of the restaurants above and enjoy the view with a frappe or (if you're not driving) an ice-cold ouzo.As the sun disappears over the horizon, the sky takes on pastel hues and merges with the sea to create a truly mesmerising picture. Don't miss Loggas Beach for a relaxing day out and one of the most special moments in Corfu.
9) Find the most beautiful beach in Corfu: Porto Timoni
If I could only see one place in Corfu, I would choose Porto Timoni Beach in a heartbeat. This is one of the most charming shores of the island and definitely one of my favourites. It's a bit of an adventure to get here, but believe me, it's worth every step. If you are coming by car, you can park at the entrance of the village or a little higher up and walk for about 20 minutes to the beach. The path is a bit bumpy, but the view you will see along the way is so impressive that you don't even realise how the road passes. When you come down, you are greeted by a glassy, double-sided bay and an atmosphere of nature. Porto Timoni is one of the most special places in Corfu to swim, explore and get lost in a mesmerising nature.
10) Discover Achilleion Palace
Rising in the leafy Gastouri district of Corfu, the Achilleion Palace is like a time capsule. Once built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (aka Sissy), this magnificent structure is now a treasure for everyone to explore. As soon as I stepped inside, I felt like I was in another era. High ceilings, elegant sculptures and walls decorated with mythological figures whispered of the past. When I stepped out into the garden, the view before my eyes was breathtaking. The lush green hills of Corfu and the vast Ionian Sea... Achilleion Palace is one of the must-see places in Corfu if you want to walk around in a fascinating atmosphere intertwined with history. Also, the casino scene of the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only (1981) was filmed in Achilleion.
11) Palaiokastritsa
Palaiokastritsa has a coastline of six small bays. Each bay is surrounded by olive trees and crystal clear waters. In addition to swimming in these bays, it is also possible to explore the underwater world by snorkelling. The rocky structure and hidden bays of the region are famous for their unique beaches, especially accessible by boat tours. During the boat tours, it is possible to discover these hidden paradises that can only be accessed by sea. When I arrived here, it was impossible not to be mesmerised by the view where emerald green waters meet rocky bays. According to Greek mythology, this is Odysseus' last stop before returning home and the legendary Scheria region. So, in a sense, you are swimming in the very heart of history. The best way to start a sunny morning here is to visit the 13th-century monastery on the hill. Afterwards, there is nothing like cooling off with a swim in the crystal clear waters. If you want to spend a day in peace, history and nature, Palaiokastritsa should definitely be on your itinerary.
