Kekova is home to Kale (Simena) and Üçağız in Antalya

Kekova, Antalya

Opposite Kale (Simena) and Üçağız (Teimiusa) villages lies Kekova, an elongated island stretching approximately 7.5 km in length and 500 m in width. Its highest peak reaches 188 m, while the depth of the sea channel between it and the mainland appears as 105 m. Renowned for its protected status, Kekova boasts not only the cleanest sea in Antalya but also carries traces of being used as a commercial and military base since at least the 5th century BC. The "Sunken City," perhaps the most vibrant corner of the island, preserves the remains of past civilizations, leaving a lasting impression on the minds of foreign tourists. Throughout history, Kekova has served as a refuge for sailors, a place for shipbuilding and repairs, although it did not possess the characteristics of a port city. The underwater streets and building remnants in Kekova are distinctly visible, often explored via special boat tours where passengers can observe settlement remains carved into the coast and submerged foundations. Approaching the archaeological remains, including the basilica apse from the Byzantine period, in Tersane Bay—the only place suitable for swimming with goggles—leaves an unforgettable impression.

Among the stops during boat tours, one can enter the Blue Cave by boat, witnessing mesmerizing colors formed by the reflection of sunlight, making the journey truly unforgettable. Another unforgettable moment occurs while navigating between the coves: when entering a natural harbor that served as a hiding place for the armored cruiser Hamidiye during World War I, one can spot the Turkish flag carved into the hillside, stirring a sense of pride.
