Accommodation like a fairy tale in Mardin: The Most Beautiful Hotels with Historical Texture
When we stepped into Mardin, we felt as if we had embarked on a journey through the dusty pages of time. Our steps echoed through the stone streets and as we disappeared into the shadows of centuries-old mansions, a fairy tale was whispered around every corner. This city, where the air was filled with the scent of spices, captivated not only our eyes but also our souls. Stone walls bearing the traces of history, embroidered balconies and the lights that spread across the Mesopotamian Plain at nightfall... Mardin is more like a living epic than a city. And the most beautiful lines of this saga are written by the hotels we stayed in. The moments we spent in these hotels, converted from old mansions, each of which opens the door to a different story, allowed us not only to visit Mardin but also to live it. Let's discover the most beautiful hotels in this fairy-tale city that shelter in the lap of history together; because staying in Mardin is much more than a vacation.
Mardius Hotel
Mardius Historic Mansion stands tall like a 700-year-old fairy tale. When we stepped into this historic mansion, we felt the warm breath of the past between the stone walls and arched doors; every corner, every carving, as if whispering a centuries-old story. History is so vivid in the rooms that the stone architecture adds a different atmosphere; this elegant dance of the past and the future is almost pampering. It's not for nothing that guests rave: friendly staff, cozy rooms overlooking the Mesopotamian Plain and a quality where every detail is thought out to the last detail. In the mornings, there is no rush to “sleep in and run to breakfast”; we phoned when we were ready and breakfast was ready in no time. A mixed breakfast with local cheeses, olives and hot, fresh bread from the hotel's own bakery started the day with a feast. In the evenings, the traditional Mardin delicacies served in the restaurant were legendary, especially the proprietary Peyran Soup, with its authentic flavors that left a mark on the palate. The food is served fresh, so fresh that you can feel the spirit of the Mardin region in every bite. And then there is the kaymak with rose syrup, which you should definitely taste at the hotel or somewhere in Mardin; this flavor makes your trip unforgettable.
Izala Hotel
As we walked through the stone-scented streets of Mardin, the door of Izala Hotel opened as if it had been waiting for us for centuries. We took a few steps and felt the peace that lingered between the stone walls. We were greeted with a warm welcome, as if we were guests in the home of an old friend. This four-star hotel offered timeless comfort in the heart of Mardin, right where the pulse of history beats. When we arrived at the rooms, we surrendered to the comfort of the bed while looking at the unique silhouette of Mardin through the window. As the dim light hit the stone walls, we felt that we were in a story with traces of the past. When we lay down on the bed, we fell into peace as if we were listening to the thousand-year-old fairy tale of Mardin. When we woke up in the morning, the breakfast table was a feast. We started our day with the smell of local cheeses, the fresh taste of olives and the warmth of freshly baked bread. But the real star was the Mardin-style stuffed eggplant we tasted on the rooftop terrace; it was a journey of flavor with every bite. Every corner of the hotel was spotlessly clean; yes, maybe some details were a bit dated, but this added a lived-in and sincerity to the spirit of the hotel. Not for nothing: “This place is great for a romantic getaway,” said couples. “The food is fantastic,” others add. And indeed it is. Izala Hotel is not just a hotel; it is a home that makes you feel the spirit of Mardin in your bones. It fills your stomach with its food and your heart with its friendly atmosphere. It is impossible to come here and not say “I would come again” because every moment we spent at Izala made us love Mardin a little more.
Selçuklu Konağı
Selçuklu Konağı is an accommodation experience where you will get lost in history on the stone streets of Mardin. When we stepped through the door, we felt as if we were on a journey centuries ago. This historical mansion, which has survived from the 19th century to the present day, is one of the most beautiful examples of Artuqid architecture. With its stone walls, arched passageways, large courtyards and details embroidered like needlepoint, it satisfied our eyes and soul. The fact that each room bears the name of an Artuqid Bey added a different meaning to the mansion. The rooms were not just a place of accommodation, they were like a modern refuge in the past. High ceilings, the aesthetics of stonework, and the immaculate beds that welcomed us with the smell of laurel... The moment we entered the room, we felt that this was not just a hotel, but a place full of experiences. Especially when we looked out of the window, the view stretching to the endless lands of Mesopotamia... Waking up in the morning and opening our eyes to that unique view was like looking at the world from a completely different perspective. One of the most pleasant surprises about breakfast was that we didn't have to follow the strict hours of classic hotel breakfasts. As if we were having breakfast at home, we enjoyed our breakfast wherever and whenever we wanted. The breakfast served at Selçuklu Konağı turned into a homey invitation. There are no other meals in the hotel; the main emphasis is on the charming atmosphere of the rooms and the unique experience of breakfast.
Maridin Hotel
Walking through the narrow stone streets of Mardin, we turned a corner and came across Maridin Hotel. This 1400-year-old stone building is one of the most beautiful mansions reflecting the spirit of the city. When we stepped through the door, the spaciousness of the high ceilings, the coolness of the stone walls and the elegant lighting of the hotel drew us into a cozy atmosphere. Every corner here bears the traces of the past; the carvings on the walls, the wooden doors, the arched windows make us feel like we are in a fairy tale. The first thing we did when we settled in our room was to sit in front of the window and gaze out over the Mesopotamian Plain. The view in front of us, the plains turning golden at sunset and the stone houses bearing the traces of history reminded us once again why Mardin is such a special city. The decoration of the rooms was also very impressive; modern comforts and historical texture were blended so well that while we were enjoying the comfort of a luxury hotel, we could not forget that we were staying in the past. As soon as we woke up in the morning, we sat down to breakfast on the terrace of the hotel. As the first rays of the day fell over Mesopotamia, we indulged ourselves at the table equipped with local delicacies. Freshly baked bread, a variety of cheeses, fragrant olives... Mardin's local flavors were the best way to start the day. While sitting on the terrace and sipping our tea, we watched the city waking up; people passing through the streets, the sound of the call to prayer coming from afar, the morning light filtering through the stone buildings...The location of Maridin Hotel was also quite advantageous. Since it is located right in the center of the city, it was very easy to reach historical and touristic places. In addition to the sauna, Turkish bath, shock pool services, you can also organize your special days and invitations at the hotel.
Shmayaa Hotel
As we walked through the stone streets of Midyat, it was as if time was pulling us backwards. As we turned a corner, we came across Shmayaa Hotel, one of the most elegant examples of stone workmanship, in all its splendor. This old stone mansion, one of the most beautiful examples of Assyrian architecture, has been carefully restored and transformed into a warm hotel welcoming its guests. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by high ceilings, stone arches and handcrafted walls. As we went up to the rooms, we felt the traces of the past in every corner. The room we were staying in was prepared with details that both preserved the historical texture and offered comfort. The old stone walls gave off a cool vibe and the dim lights added a mystical atmosphere to the place. This is one of the rare places where you can feel the spirit of Midyat. When we woke up in the morning, a wonderful breakfast was waiting for us on the terrace. We started the day with local cheeses, freshly squeezed fruit juices, hot bread fresh from the oven and Midyat-specific breakfast foods. During the day, we had the opportunity to experience the most special flavors of Mardin cuisine in the hotel restaurant. Especially stuffed ribs and Syriac wines were the stars of the meal. These wines, made from grapes grown in the fertile soil of the Southeast, are part of a centuries-old tradition.Midyat's historical bazaar, stone mansions and churches reflecting the Assyrian culture can be reached within a few minutes walk. The stairs to the upper floors can be a bit challenging for elderly guests, but the peaceful atmosphere and the sincere interest of the staff make you forget this small detail.
