Gallipoli refers to a peninsula located in northwestern Turkey that played a significant role in World War I. During the war, British, French, and ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) forces launched a naval and amphibious assault on the Ottoman Empire's capital, istanbul, by way of the Dardanelles strait, which passes through the Gallipoli peninsula.The campaign began in February 1915, but the Allied forces encountered heavy resistance from the Ottoman troops, and the campaign quickly devolved into a stalemate. Despite several attempts to break through the Ottoman lines, the Allies were unable to gain a significant foothold on the peninsula. After several months of fighting, the Allies eventually abandoned the campaign and withdrew their forces in January 1916.The Gallipoli campaign was a significant military defeat for the Allies and resulted in heavy casualties on both sides. It is also seen as a turning point in the war, as it forced the Allies to reconsider their strategy and focus their efforts elsewhere. The campaign is remembered as a symbol of national identity and sacrifice for the ANZAC forces, and April 25th is commemorated as ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand.
