Nişantaşı, a district of Şişli district of Istanbul, is one of the most important addresses of fashion and shopping today. The name of Nişantaşı comes from a stone erected in the center of the district at the intersection of Governor's Mansion and Teşvikiye Avenues. According to a rumor, it was Selim III who had the first stone erected here. The sultan used to come to this town to practice shooting and had a stone erected at the farthest place where he shot an arrow. The second stone was erected here by Mahmut II. It is said that the name of the neighborhood came from these stones. Later, during the reign of Abdülmecit II, a neighborhood was established on these lands by order. In the following years, circumcision ceremonies of princes were also held here. Thus, the interest of high-ranking officials and the public was concentrated in this neighborhood. After the 1850s, the neighborhood started to develop further. Nişantaşı's proximity to districts such as Beyoğlu-Pera was also effective in its rapid development and Westernization. During the Republican period, the neighborhood was rapidly structured and many apartment buildings were built. Today, many of the stores of world-famous brands, art, fashion and entertainment centers are located in Nişantaşı.
