Karamürsel is a district located south of Kocaeli, near İzmit, on the southern coast of the Gulf. The name "Karamürsel" originates from Mürsel Bey, an Ottoman sailor also known as "Kara" Mürsel Bey. The district joined the Ottoman Empire in the late 1320s, but it has been utilized by various civilizations since ancient times, including the Persians and Byzantines. Despite periods of Greek and British occupation, it became part of Turkish territory again in the history of the Republic. One of its notable features is its coastal strip.
Until the tragic and significant earthquake of 1999, it was known as one of the places in Turkey with the most tea gardens. Particularly along the coastline, it offers excellent places for leisure activities such as picnic areas, swimming spots, tea gardens, walking and cycling paths, essentially serving as a perfect waterfront area in the Gulf. Additionally, there are many places, venues, and resting areas worth visiting along the coastal strip of Karamürsel.
Being close to major cities like istanbul, Bursa, and Kocaeli, Karamürsel is ideal for day trips, offering a serene environment where one can unwind and relax. It features numerous restaurants serving seafood, as well as local farmers' markets offering agricultural products. Parks dominate the coastal area, providing ample space for recreation. Karamürsel is also known as a place where travelers can take a break on their journey from istanbul to İzmit or along the Anatolian roads. Moreover, with its rich history and ancient civilization, it is an important destination that should be explored and appreciated.
