Kayakoy Guide
Kayaköy is actually believed to be a Greek village founded around 2,400 years ago. When we think of a traditional Greek village, we imagine rocky terrains, stone houses, cobbled streets, and a lifestyle based on viticulture, olive farming, and fishing rather than agriculture. And that's exactly how the people of Kayaköy once lived.
Until the population exchange, the village was predominantly inhabited by Greeks. After the exchange, it became home to Turks who migrated from Greece. However, since Turks generally preferred plains or arable land, they eventually left the village. And just like that, Kayaköy became one of the most beautiful ghost villages.
Although today there are signs of settlement and population, especially following recent restorations, Kayaköy remained abandoned for a long time. The stone houses, which make up most of the architecture, have some wooden parts that have decayed over time, giving the village an eerie appearance which, nowadays, adds to its charm.
Around 800 houses in Kayaköy have been placed under protection. Much like the houses in Mardin, these were built in such a way that none block each other's view or sunlight, and this design dates back centuries. The houses are also built with almost identical dimensions, and when viewed from above, they create a stunning visual pattern.
While there are now some facilities slowly developing around the area, Kayaköy is actually a historical site. It is under preservation status and requires an entrance fee.

As for food, although there are various alternatives, we recommend you to try the local people's pancakes. Don't forget to take a tour on the hiking trails and walk the stone streets of the village. The surrounding hills are ideal for photography. And while visiting these places, remember Çağan Irmak's famous movie: Dedemin İnsanları. Because this movie is about the population exchange. Thus, your trip will become even more meaningful.
