The History of Kuşadası

From 2000 B.C., people from Lelegia, Caria, and Lydia settled at the foot of Pilav Mountain. Over time, settlements like Pigale, Maratheson, Neopolis, and Panionion emerged. The Ionians and later the Romans of Ephesus inhabited these lands. The city was invaded by the Persians around 546 B.C. Due to earthquakes, the Caystros River changed its course, heavily damaging Ephesus. This led the Byzantines to seek a new port and trade route, founding a port near Neopolis, called Scala Nova, which laid the foundations of today's Kuşadası. Kuşadası came under Turkish rule with the conquest of Sultan Mehmet Çelebi in 1413 and eventually became an essential trade and tourism center.
