Odunpazari Guide
The time I spent in Odunpazarı took me on an in-depth journey into the history and culture of Eskişehir. From the moment I took my first step, I could feel the historical atmosphere inside me. Odunpazarı is like an open-air museum, with a different story in every corner.
You cannot leave this place without visiting the historical Odunpazarı Houses. These two-story, wood-worked houses have carried the elegant traces of the Ottoman period to the present day. As you pass through the narrow streets, these colorfully painted houses are almost lost in time. Not only their structures but also the smell of history in every step of the stone streets. Each of these houses is like a work of art.
Kurşunlu Mosque and Complex attracted my attention as one of the most important structures of the city throughout history. Built in 1525, the mosque fascinated me with the fine details in its interior. The Meerschaum Museum, located inside the complex, was full of objects made of meerschaum, the symbol of Eskişehir. Entrance was free and I went on a historical and cultural journey in this museum. It was really enjoyable to learn every detail about meerschaum.
Another important place in Odunpazarı is Atlıhan Handicraft Bazaar. This old inn has now turned into a handicraft bazaar. Here you can find wonderful examples of traditional Turkish handicrafts. It is really enjoyable to get lost among ceramics, carpets and hand-woven products. Even if you don't shop, seeing traditional handicrafts is an experience in itself.
Yılmaz Büyükerşen Wax Sculptures Museum also showed me the modern face of Eskişehir. Wax sculptures of famous Turkish and world leaders are exhibited here and you are mesmerized as you see them. The museum was very interesting and you don't want to miss this different experience.
If you want to take a more modern stroll, you should definitely visit Odunpazarı Modern Museum. This museum, where contemporary artworks are exhibited, brings together wonderful works by both local and foreign artists. Its architectural structure was just as impressive.
