Places to see in Buyukada

You can go to Hagia Yorgi Church and Monastery located at the highest point in Buyukada. According to the belief, the wishes of those who can walk up to this church will be granted. This church is the only church accepted by the archdiocese in Turkey. The history of the church dates back to the 12th century. While visiting the church and the monastery, you can also see the historical artifacts inside. Moreover, the most beautiful view of Istanbul and the island can be seen from here.

You can see the place called Nun Rock where, according to the belief, the shapes on the rocks resemble people and animals. According to the legends, Euphrosyne, the daughter of Constantinus VI, who lived in Istanbul, was locked up in the cells of the Women's Monastery here for the first time when she was seven years old and eventually petrified, unable to bear the longing for Istanbul.

You can visit the Christos Church and monastery and the Greek Orphanage on the so-called Jesus Hill. Although a bit ruined, the building is still one of the largest wooden monoblock buildings in the world.

You can see Ayios Dimitios Church and Hamidiye Mosque.
You can visit the Reşat Nuri Güntekin Mansion. Opposite Sedef Island, a two-storey house with a garden and pink moldings, where the famous writer Reşat Nuri Güntekin lived for many years, has now been converted into a museum. This house, where the author wrote many of his works, is one of the most visited places on the island.

You must see the Museum of the Islands. Istanbul's first contemporary urban museum, the Museum of the Islands presents the story of the islands from their formation to the present day to its visitors with its collection of hundreds of objects, 20 thousand documents, 6 thousand photographs, hundreds of documentary footage, films and oral history records. In the museum, it is possible to see the replica of the fish known as the “Armored Fish” that lived in these seas 400 million years ago and the fossil of a 385 million year old squid-like creature that also lived in these waters...
