Places to see in Marmaris

In a town like Marmaris, which is worth seeing with its history and nature, there are many places you should visit. You can see the Castle, one of the important historical buildings in the city center. The castle was first built by the Ionians. Today's castle was built by the Ottomans in 1522. The castle was badly damaged by cannon fire from a French warship in 1914. During the Republican period, it was opened to settlement and 18 houses and fountains were built. The castle was restored between 1980-90 and today there is a museum inside. The entrance of the castle opens directly to the garden. Two of the closed spaces are organized as archaeology museums.

In the garden and in these two halls, artifacts from excavations in the region, amphoras, terracotta, glass artifacts, coins and ornaments from Knidos, Burgaz, Hisarönü excavations are exhibited. One of the galleries is the ethnography hall organized as the Turkish House, and another is the room of the castle commander. A day full of history awaits you. Another Ottoman structure in the city is Hafza Sultan Caravanserai. It was built in 1545, according to the inscription on it. Covered with arches, the caravanserai is just at the entrance of the narrow and stepped street leading to the castle. You can visit here.

You can go to the Historical Bedesten in the bazaar, you can both visit and shop, you should also take photos. There are other monuments dating back to the Ottoman period in the vicinity of Marmaris.

The İbrahim Ağa Mosque in Kemeraltı Neighborhood was built in 1789, while Taşhan and Kemerli Bridge at the 10th kilometer of the Muğla road were built in 1552. The mausoleum of Sarıana, famous for his prophecies, visited by Suleiman the Magnificent before his Rhodes expedition, is in the neighborhood of the same name. According to the legend, all the soldiers of the huge Ottoman army preparing for the Rhodes expedition had breakfast with the milk of Sarıana's only cow.
