Places to see Uchisar

Uçhisar Castle offers the highest point in Cappadocia, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the entire region. Although it takes hundreds of steps to reach the top, it is absolutely worth it as you’ll be surrounded by the clouds at this windy spot. Especially during sunset, the red hues of the fairy chimneys and the vibrant colors reflecting from the valley are a sight not to be missed. The castle, originally used by early Christians fleeing Roman persecution for hiding and defense, was also used as a watchtower during the Seljuk period. The view from the top is truly spectacular, and you can take a step back in time while exploring the ancient rooms and corridors within the castle.

The castle is made up of two large fairy chimneys, one taller than the other, creating a striking silhouette. The larger chimney is referred to as the "Ağa's Castle," while the smaller one is known as the "Çavuş's Castle." Inside the castle, there are stairs leading up to numerous rooms, cellars, bunkers, and storage areas, offering a glimpse into how people lived during that era. The castle was used as a residence and lived in until the 1950s, serving as a home for nearly 1,000 years.

Another significant castle is Tığraz Castle, the second largest in Uçhisar. It is built into a hillside and has seven levels, resembling an underground shelter descending into the Güvercinlik Valley. The structure blends seamlessly with the unique architecture of Cappadocia, and from the outside, it presents a beautiful panoramic view, allowing visitors to appreciate its design before venturing inside.

The Kuran Castle holds a special place in the region’s history, particularly for Muslims. In the past, it was used as a storage place for Arabic writings, religious documents, and books, which were thrown into the cone-shaped fairy chimney to prevent disrespect. Though the items are lost over time, the chimney still holds a mystical aura.

Karakale, located near Uçhisar, is another site worth visiting. Known for its black appearance, Karakale's solid structure has withstood centuries, although only the remains of its walls are left today. The southern wall of the castle remains the most intact part of the structure, with broken stones and remnants of graves from the late Roman and Byzantine periods.

Güvercinlik Valley is one of the most natural and scenic spots in Cappadocia, perfect for trekking. There are two entry points: one from Uçhisar and another from the south, near Göreme. As you trek through the valley, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Uçhisar Castle, see the famous pigeon nests, and encounter rich flora and a 15-meter-high waterfall. In the middle of the valley, you’ll also discover a church dating back to the Byzantine period. For centuries, pigeons have inhabited the valley, and their droppings were used to fertilize the vineyards, while their eggs were believed to have magical properties for restoring the colors of the Frexit murals.

Göreme National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a visual feast with its unique fairy chimneys and ancient churches carved into the rocks. The park has preserved remnants of Christian settlements from the 7th to 13th centuries, where rock-cut churches and their frescoes are still visible. The park's atmosphere, combined with cool summer breezes and warm winter winds, provides a perfect balance of natural beauty and tranquility.

Cevizli, located just below Uçhisar Castle, is another notable spot. Known for its multi-layered fairy chimneys resembling apartment buildings, Cevizli is a great location for trekking. These fairy chimneys have been transformed into shelters, small inns, souvenir shops, and cozy cafes for tourists. Along with the Şapkalı Castle and Kekliğin Castle, Cevizli offers a chance to explore unique rock formations and experience the charm of the region up close.

Cappadocia's captivating nature and historical sites are scattered throughout the region, offering a sense of stepping into another world. Every corner of this magical land invites exploration, and once you visit, you’ll want to stay in this dreamlike place forever.
